If it's recommendations you want, I can totally recommend the Quest for Glory series, which I've been replaying a bit lately; think a point-and-click game like King's Quest or Monkey Island, only with RPG elements (combat, skills, etc.), along with the usual Sierra bad puns.
You can get the first 4 games as Quest for Glory Anthology (5th one's separate, though), and I think 1-3 (and maybe 4) can also be d/l'ed from certain Abandonware sites. Coolest part is, you can import characters between games, so you can stick with the same character throughout all five.
Interesting things to note:
1) QFG1 and 2 have a combination mouse/text parser interface; it's a pain in the ass for QFG1, but is actually managable (and occasionally fun if you type in the right stuff) in QFG2.
2) QFG1 was remade into a VGA version with a mouse interface, and an independent company (AGDI Interactive) is remaking QFG2 the same way (it's in the alpha testing stage far as anyone knows).
3) For any of these, you will need to hunt down the patches, as some (particularly QFG4) have a few nasty bugs.
4) Also keep in mind that QFG1-4 run best on DOSBox (haven't tried any other DOS emulators, but I can't imagine them being any better).
